Memories of Translator Jaroslav Zaorálek is far from a traditional biography. The book offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of two remarkable figures – translator Jaroslav Zaorálek and his wife, sculptor Hedvika – and their place within the lesser-seen layers of 20th-century Czech culture.
The graphic design draws directly from authentic typewritten diary entries. Raw scans, complete with visible typos, corrections, and fragmented passages, became the central visual motif. These elements shape the entire book – from the cover and pagination style to the core layout. The chosen typeface, Crabath by Czech foundry Suitcase Type Foundry, subtly references typewritten aesthetics and is rooted in Krabat’s historical specimens. The kraft paper cover further emphasizes the rawness and authenticity of the narrative, staying true to the diary’s original form.
