Five Lights Above the Water

The Bold gallery introduced the spiritual series of 20 canvases, which painter Jakub Špaňhel created on Jan Nepomuk, in the Five Lights Above the Water exhibition. They are paintings carved into the canvas with the expression and ability to use grandiose gestures to evoke a play of light and shadow, concentrated colorful energy as well as the atmosphere of spiritual places. The format and graphic style of the exhibition catalogue containing a text from the curator corresponds to the square format and striking black and white paintings of the largest canvases inspired by baroque graphics. The subdued colors and size of the graphic features allow the paintings to stand out. What is more, they are installed with maximum use of the potential offered by the gallery, which is located in a historical building in close proximity to Charles Bridge, from where John of Nepomuk was thrown into the river in 1393. In the catalogue, the surface of the water is depicted through a horizontal line that intersects all of its pages.
